Canton Lights Two Christmas Trees This Season. Here's How Downtown and The Mill Split the Holidays.

On the evening of Wednesday, November 18, the Knox STEM Academy Chorus and the Avery Elementary Chorus will sing in Cannon Park, the City of Canton will light its Christmas tree at 130 East Main Street, and then a holiday drone show will fly over Main Street. Ten days later, on Saturday, November 28 at 6 p.m., Santa will help light a second tree a short drive away at The Mill on Etowah, 225 Reformation Parkway, while Joe Gransden performs.

Canton's 2026 holiday calendar runs on two stages, and apart from the rink's long season, no event on one stage shares a date with an event on the other. Downtown has the weeknights plus one parade weekend. The Mill has the long weekends and an ice rink that runs from before Thanksgiving into the middle of January. If you know which stage owns which night, you can plan the whole season.

The Calendar, Laid Side by Side

Here is every scheduled date from now through mid-January, from the City of Canton's event calendar, Explore Canton and The Mill on Etowah's Christmas page.

Dec. 18 Friday Grinchmas, 5 to 9 p.m.
Dec. 19 Saturday Polar Express: A Winter Wonderland, 2 to 8 p.m.
Jan. 18 Last day of the rink season

Outside the rink's daily season, no two events share a date. Each stage also gets one back-to-back December pair. Downtown has Friday, December 11 and Saturday, December 12. The Mill has Friday, December 18 and Saturday, December 19. A family could go to every event on both lists without choosing between them on any night.

Downtown Holds the Weeknights

The city's half of the season is built around evenings after work and school. The tree lighting falls on a Wednesday. Mistletoe on Main runs on three Thursdays, and each one has its own draw. On December 3 there are live reindeer. December 10 brings a special activity the organizers say they will announce later. On December 17, Christmas Pete arrives covered in Christmas lights. All three Thursdays include a free wagon ride through downtown and a visit with Santa at the gazebo in Cannon Park. The Mistletoe on Main listing invites families to arrive early, shop downtown and stay for dinner at a local restaurant.

Friday, December 11 is the busiest night downtown. Christmas in Canton runs from 6 to 10 p.m. in Cannon Park with Santa, a petting zoo, face painting, wagon rides, a balloon artist, a s'mores station, inflatables, cookie decorating, make-and-take crafts, wreath making and another stop from Christmas Pete. The city says downtown shops will stay open late and restaurants will be ready for guests. A four-hour Friday evening with shops open late is the closest thing on the city's calendar to a shopping night, and it falls the night before the parade.

The One Saturday Downtown Claims

The parade is the one weekend event the city keeps for itself, and it has the longest history of anything on either calendar. The 39th annual Downtown Canton Merry Market fills Cannon Park with small-business vendors, downtown shops, Santa and food from noon to 6 p.m. on Saturday, December 12. The Christmas Parade starts at 6 p.m., right when the market closes.

The Canton Optimist Club's parade page has the logistics for anyone deciding where to stand and when to arrive:

  • The viewing route goes east from West Main Street and Waleska Street to North Street, then turns west on North Street.
  • Float staging at Old Cherokee High School begins at 3 p.m.
  • Staging on West Main Street begins at 3:30 p.m., and West Main will be closed to traffic.
  • Parade vehicles leave west on North Street to Waleska Street, turn left on Anderson Avenue, then left on Marietta Highway.

For a Merry Market shopper, the 3:30 p.m. closure on West Main matters most. It begins while the market still has more than two hours left, so a car parked on that side of downtown at lunchtime will be behind the barricades by mid-afternoon.

The Mill Holds the Weekends and the Ice

The Mill on Etowah plans its season around days off. Christmas at The Mill, now in its sixth year, runs the Friday and Saturday after Thanksgiving, November 27 and 28, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Organizers list more than 85 vendor booths, ice skating under the lights and football on a big screen. The vendor list mixes in plenty of local names, including Confessions Coffee, Canton Cigar Bar, Damsel Romantic Bookstore, Baked by Bri and Cloud Flowers and Gardens. The tree lighting program starts Saturday at 6 p.m. with a performance by Joe Gransden, and Canton City Lifestyle's Chicka Elloy hosts the ceremony before Santa joins for the lighting.

The Mill's next two events come on the third weekend of December. Grinchmas, on Friday, December 18 from 5 to 9 p.m., includes a toy drive, a visit from the Grinch, train rides and an outdoor film. The next afternoon, Goin' Social Events presents the third annual Polar Express: A Winter Wonderland, which runs from 2 to 8 p.m. and is free for all ages. Santa and an Elf Kids Dance Party run from 4 to 6 p.m., followed by a Polar Express sing-along movie from 6:30 to 8 p.m. A holiday market and Christmas pop-up bars serve hot cocoa and festive cocktails, with cocktails for guests 21 and over. Skating that day is presented by Iceholes and costs extra.

What makes The Mill a season-long stage is the rink. Rink on the River is back for its sixth season, presented by Ice Holes LLC, and The Mill lists skating from November 21 through January 18. The rink opens six days before The Mill's own festival and three days after downtown's tree lighting. It keeps running for more than a month after the parade, past every event on either calendar. The Mill sends skaters to the Rink on the River Facebook page for updates, special events and weather-related changes, and The Mill also posts a festival parking map for its busy weekends.

Thirty-Nine Years and Six

The ages of the events explain the split. The Downtown Canton Christmas Parade is in its 39th year. Christmas at The Mill and Rink on the River are both in their sixth. The Mill came into a season that already had a firm anchor in mid-December, and its calendar stays clear of it. Its largest festival falls on Thanksgiving weekend, two weeks before the parade. Its other two events come the weekend after.

Some local businesses also show up on both sides. Tate Fireplaces is listed among the 2026 sponsors of the city's tree lighting and is also a sponsor of both the Merry Market and Christmas in Canton.

Not every downtown tradition carries into winter. First Fridays, the city's monthly downtown series, runs from May through October, so there are no November or December dates. The Mistletoe on Main Thursdays fill most of that gap.

Building a Season Out of Both

Planned around the two stages, the season breaks into four parts.

  1. The week of November 16. Start downtown on Wednesday the 18th with the choruses, the tree and the drone show. The rink at The Mill opens that Saturday, November 21.
  2. Thanksgiving weekend. Christmas at The Mill fills Friday and Saturday, ending with the second tree lighting Saturday at 6 p.m.
  3. The first two weeks of December. Weeknights belong to downtown, with reindeer on December 3, the special activity on December 10, Christmas in Canton on Friday the 11th, and the Merry Market and parade on Saturday the 12th.
  4. The week before Christmas. Christmas Pete visits downtown on Thursday the 17th. Then The Mill takes over with Grinchmas Friday and Polar Express Saturday, and the rink keeps running into January.

You will pass one newer business on Marietta Highway between visits. Soundtrack Soda Co. opened in the former Biskit Barn at 3350 Marietta Hwy, as reported in the Cherokee Tribune-Ledger News, and the shop's site says its drive-thru is open. Marietta Highway is also where parade vehicles finish their exit route on December 12.

Seasons like this one, with a downtown that has held its traditions for nearly four decades and a newer riverfront stage that has built its own, are part of why the Canton homes we represent are easy for buyers to picture themselves in.
