Homestead Exemption

Camille Lialios

As tax season fast approaches, we are all looking for ways to keep more money in our own pockets. Good news for those who closed on their primary residence in 2023, you can file for a homestead exemption, which helps reduce the amount of property taxes you will have to pay.

There are several types of homestead exemptions available to Milton property owners. Anyone can apply for the Basic Homestead Exemption. This must be done through Fulton County at fultonassessor.org/exemptions/, though it can affect your City of Milton property taxes as well. There are more specific requirements (based on things like age, income, disability, or whether or not you’re a veteran) for a number of other available options, too.

You can find out more about all the homestead exemption options for Milton residents by going to www.miltonga.gov/Exemptions.

If you live outside of Milton, you must file with the county or city where your home is located. Each county has different applications and required documents. Various types of homestead exemptions are available, including those based on assessed home value and homeowner age.

Homestead exemption applications are due on or before April 1 for the current tax year, and you only have to file one time for it to continue to reduce your taxes year after year.
